Primary education
Project Work
Primary education takes place during the evolutionary stage that encompasses the years from 6 to 12 and comprises six academic years, divided into three cycles of two years for each cycle. At these ages, children are well disposed towards learning, so this is considered to be the most important school stage.
The SEK Education System has its own methodology, with materials that have been developed by our teachers, combining individual work in each of the areas (specific work) with parallel work on a Project (participative work).
The fundamental core of activity at these ages is expression oneself and oral comprehension, reading, writing, arithmetic, acquisition of basic cultural knowledge and social skills, and strategies for studying and working. This integrated training programme provides the foundations for the full development of the personality of the student and facilitates their entry into the following stage.
The contents of the curriculum fall into three main reference frames:
ME AND MY WORLD. Children discover their own selves, come to know their own identities and as authors of their actions can organize their world and project themselves to others.
THE WORLD WHERE I LIVE. The pupils discover and get to know all aspects of the world in an objective way.
- How we communicate: language.
- How we organise ourselves: logic and mathematics.
- How we interpret the world: art and creativity (music, art and drama).
- How nature works: science (the natural environment).
- How human beings behave: society (the social environment).
THE WORLD WE LOVE. The pupil acquires the desire to construct a better world founded on values, rules and principles that promote respect and accommodate differences.
The children not only learn English , but also learn in English, demonstrating their skills to themselves through external examinations. This second language satisfies a principal objective in the search for information when the students undertake "School Research Projects".
Physical activity and sports promote the pupil's functional development and create a lasting love for sport.
ICT, with computers in the classrooms, is a fundamental part of the curriculum, both as a learning aid and as a tool and vehicle in the production of school work.
"Creative Workshops" in mathematical logic, communication, artistic expression and drama in Spanish and English enrich the learning experience.
In addition to the subjects on the curriculum we include the programmes Learning to be (for the development of the personality with the support of the tutor who is close to the student and the parents) and Learning to think (for the improvement of intelligence, with specific contents and materials).
Technology in the classroom
In Primary Education, the computer is a versatile educational tool for all kinds of information processing and promotes interactions based on actions. It is a useful medium for the creation of learning environments in which activities can be directed towards the construction of knowledge and in which learning becomes significant; the child "learns by doing".
In addition, the use of computers and specific software is especially appropriate for the completion of "Projects" and interdisciplinary activities that are a part of our system of Primary Education.
New technologies offer the chance to create very varied learning situations. Some of the daily applications of the computer in Primary classrooms are: virtual simulations of complex operations, the production of written work, the storage and organization of data, education by listening, getting closer to distant environments, problem solving and accessing web pages selected by the teaching team.
